Ok I might get a lot of shit for this, but I don't see why Jay Z is considered all that great? The lyrical content of this song sucks (yeah we get it you're rich and you're going to stay that way), the music isn't anything special, and the video is a 4 minute commercial for all of his gadgets (cars, champaign, etc.) guised as an artsy video (i laughed out loud when he says "I use my kahonas" and what is on the screen? two metallic balls).
I like the majority of his music, but I'm still confused why people hold him in such high regard.
I'm gonna take a stab at this one Cole. I think critics love Jay-Z because Reasonable Doubt and The Blueprint are about a good as a rap album can be, so his other stuff gets to go along for the ride, despite the fact that it is weaker musically. He also generally turns out good singles, which keeps him popular with the average rap listener. And his overwhelming fame and image don't hurt either. Jay-Z is on a level of self-promotion that very few have reached. Hell, if he was just some guy who was married to Beyonce I'd still think he was the shit. So his coolness is probably the deciding factor here.
However, I'm still baffled by the fact that he records his raps BEFORE the beats are added.
